Chile to close embassy in Tehran due to security and resource optimization

The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the closure of its embassy in Tehran, Iran, effective August 31, 2026. The decision is attributed to an operational reorganization aimed at optimizing available resources and aligning with the government's foreign policy priorities.

Security concerns in the Middle East were cited as a primary driver for the move, with officials noting the need to protect Chilean diplomatic personnel and their families from regional instability. Additionally, the ministry pointed to low consular activity due to the small number of Chilean residents in Iran and the country's difficult economic situation.

The government emphasized that this closure does not constitute a break in diplomatic relations between Chile and Iran. All consular services and administrative procedures for Chilean citizens in the region will be transferred to the Chilean Consulate in Ankara, Turkey, starting September 1.
