Chile to expel six foreigners detained during Santiago protests
Chilean President José Antonio Kast has announced the expulsion of six foreign nationals detained during violent demonstrations in Santiago. The unrest occurred during protests marking the seventh anniversary of the country’s social uprising, resulting in injuries to six police officers.
Kast instructed the Ministry of the Interior and the National Migration Service (Sermig) to utilize all legal and administrative tools to carry out the removals. The president stated that the government will not permit foreign citizens to participate in violent acts to disrupt public order.
Sermig Director Frank Sauerbaum confirmed that the agency is beginning procedures to revoke the permanent residency of the detainees. The group includes three Peruvians, two Haitians, and one Venezuelan. Five of the individuals held permanent residency, while one Haitian national had a recent application for Chilean citizenship rejected.
