Chile electricity rates projected to drop 4.3% nationally in 2027

A preliminary report from the National Energy Commission (CNE) projects a 4.3% average decrease in residential electricity rates across Chile starting in January 2027. This downward trend is expected to benefit 13 of the country's 16 regions, with the most significant reductions occurring in northern areas such as Antofagasta (-11%), Atacama (-10.2%), and Arica y Parinacota (-9.9%).

Several factors drive these decreases, including favorable exchange rate variations and the expiration of high-cost electricity generation contracts from 2008 and 2010, which are being replaced by more competitive agreements from recent years.

Conversely, three southern regions are projected to face rate increases. Los Ríos is expected to see the highest rise at 6.2%, followed by Los Lagos at 4.9%, and Magallanes at 2.4%. The increases in Los Ríos and Los Lagos are attributed to delays in critical transmission infrastructure projects, specifically the Cautín-Ciruelos line. Magallanes' increase is due to its status as an isolated system not connected to the National Electric System, making its rates sensitive to international fuel prices and specific indexation formulas.
