Chile unveils $3.7 bn infrastructure plan to create 246,000 jobs
The Chilean government announced a public‑infrastructure investment program worth US$3.7 billion for the year, roughly 0.85 % of GDP. The portfolio includes more than US$15 billion of works by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) and an additional US$500 million to rebuild infrastructure damaged by recent storms in the north.
The plan targets the creation of around 246,000 jobs over the current administration. MOP’s projects are expected to generate about 180,000 positions, while the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications aims for roughly 56,500 jobs through metro expansions (Lines 7 and 9, extension of Line 6) and new rail projects such as Santiago‑Melipilla, Santiago‑Batuco and service upgrades to Chillán. An estimated 44,000 jobs will be added each year, with the northern‑reconstruction effort contributing about 10,000 additional jobs. The bulk of the projects will be carried out in the Bío Bío, La Araucanía, Los Lagos and Magallanes regions.
