Chile urges safer driving as winter rains cause accidents

Intense winter rains across Chile have led to a surge in traffic accidents, many fatal. Traffic safety expert Emilio Moyano, a professor of psychology at the University of Talca, says drivers often fail to adjust their habits for the wet conditions. He notes common errors such as maintaining normal speed, neglecting tire tread depth, and not using appropriate lights, which increase stopping distances and risk of hydroplaning.

Moyano recommends reducing speed by 10–20 km/h, keeping at least a four‑second gap behind the vehicle ahead, using low‑beam headlights and fog lights when visibility drops, and checking wipers and tire tread (minimum 3 mm). Planning trips in advance and driving more cautiously around fallen branches, water pools, and deteriorated pavement can further prevent accidents.
