Chile withdraws from the Non-Aligned Movement

Chile has announced its withdrawal from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), an organization it has been a member of since 1971. The Chilean Foreign Ministry stated the decision was based on the premise that the entity was created in a different global context and no longer responds to current challenges and realities.

The Non-Aligned Movement was formally established in 1961 in Belgrade, following the 1955 Bandung Conference. It was founded by leaders such as Josip Broz Tito, Gamal Abdel Nasser, and Jawaharlal Nehru to promote sovereignty and peaceful coexistence during the Cold War era. While the movement once held significant influence during the bipolar era of the United States and the Soviet Union, critics and observers note that its role has shifted in the modern geopolitical landscape.
