Chilean academic leaders debate the future of universities and AI

Academic leaders and commentators in Chile are debating the evolving role of universities in the face of artificial intelligence and the perceived devaluation of the humanities and social sciences.

During a seminar at Universidad Finis Terrae titled ‘El sentido de ser universidad’, former rectors Rosa Devés (University of Chile) and Ignacio Sánchez (Catholic University), along with current rector Juan Eduardo Vargas, discussed the necessity of preserving the university as a unique space for thought and community. Devés emphasized the importance of protecting the institution's capacity to produce knowledge and transform without losing its identity, while Sánchez highlighted the need to maintain the foundational ethos of gathering students and professors in a pluralistic environment.

The debate also touches on broader cultural tensions regarding how society values different types of knowledge. Recent controversies involving statements by the Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation, Ximena Lincolao, have highlighted a growing difficulty in distinguishing between knowledge that has a market price and knowledge that holds intrinsic social value.
