Chilean Air Force extends night aerial operations in Magallanes

The Chilean Air Force (FACh) has expanded its aerial deployment in the Magallanes Region to include nighttime operations. This expansion utilizes F-16 Block 50 fighters, F-5E Tigre III aircraft, and KC-135 Stratotanker refueling planes to ensure continuous air coverage over the Strait of Magellan and its maritime access points.

Operating from Punta Arenas, these missions aim to maintain effective control over a strategic interoceanic connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, despite the region's complex weather and vast distances. The KC-135 tankers serve as force multipliers, allowing for prolonged combat air patrols (CAP) and extended operational reach toward southern latitudes.

In conjunction with these operations, FACh conducted a demonstration of the F-16C/D Block 50 capabilities at the Chabunco Air Base for military and police authorities in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region. The demonstration was part of a 20-day flight training program designed to prepare crews for the specific geographic and meteorological challenges of the southern territory.
