Chilean archive discovery corrects Baldomero Lillo marriage date

Officials from Chile’s Civil Registry and Identification Service have discovered the original marriage certificate of renowned author Baldomero Lillo, correcting a long-standing biographical error. The document confirms that the author of “Sub Terra” and “Sub Sole” married in November 1900, rectifying the date of 1897 that had been widely cited in encyclopedias, websites, and public records.

To formalize this correction, the National Director of the Civil Registry, Omar Morales, met with the Director of the National Library, Soledad Abarca, to deliver an authenticated copy of the document. This will allow the National Library to officially update the biographical information available to the public.

The discovery occurs alongside discussions in the National Congress regarding a bill to establish a monument and a heritage circuit in Lota to honor Lillo, whose works famously depicted the hardships of mining life and worker dignity.
