Chilean Army Trains Navy Marines in Winter Mountain Techniques in Magallanes

The Mountain Reconnaissance Platoon of the 11th Motorized Detachment (Caupolicán) of the Chilean Army conducted instruction for personnel of the 4th Marine Infantry Detachment (Cochrane) of the Chilean Navy in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic region. The program covered winter mountain movement, glacier travel and a traversal of the Darwin Range from CMT Cordillera de Darwin to CMT Caleta 2 de Mayo. It also included a self‑rescue module, skiing, randonnée marches, rope work and natural and artificial anchoring techniques.

Lieutenant Sergio Gutiérrez, commander of the mountain platoon, said the training strengthens inter‑service competence and prepares troops for the country's rugged terrain. The army highlighted its mountain expertise as a national and international reference in operating in mountainous environments.
