Judicial leadership changes and reforms in Venezuela and Nicaragua

In Venezuela, the National Assembly has unanimously approved a partial reform of the Organic Law of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ). The reform modifies the Judicial Nominations Committee, increasing its membership from 21 to 23. The new structure will consist of 11 deputies and 12 representatives from various sectors of civil society. This change follows dialogue agreements between the government and opposition aimed at transforming the justice system and renewing the tribunal's magistrates. While some academic bodies have expressed concerns regarding the impartiality of the process, others view the increased civil society participation as a step toward greater transparency.

In Nicaragua, the National Assembly has sworn in Ana Julia Guido Ochoa as the new president of the Supreme Court of Justice, with José Manuel Fuerte as vice president. This follows the resignation of magistrate Alba Luz Ramos. The appointment comes amid scrutiny regarding the independence of the judiciary in the country.
