Chilean authorities evaluate firebreaks in Puerto Toro
Authorities in Chile are implementing preventive measures to mitigate wildfire risks ahead of the summer season. In Puerto Toro, the southernmost village in the world, officials from the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) and the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred) are evaluating a project to construct firebreaks and manage vegetation.
The initiative aims to reduce risks to local housing by removing dead vegetation and creating forest-free strips. Due to the village's isolation and limited emergency response capacity, officials emphasized the importance of improving the surrounding environment to build community resilience.
