Chilean authorities investigate homicide attempt and rising femicide rates

In Panguipulli, authorities have detained a Chilean man following an attempted homicide on September 12. The victim reported being intercepted in a rural area by individuals in two vehicles and attacked with a sharp object, resulting in a neck wound. The investigation, led by the Organized Crime and Homicide Team (ECOH) of the Los Ríos Regional Prosecutor's Office, suggests the incident may be linked to rival gang conflicts. The suspect has been placed at the disposal of the Panguipulli Guarantee Court.

Separately, the 2025 Annual Report of the Intersectoral Femicide Circuit revealed that the Arica and Parinacota region recorded 11 cases of extreme violence against women, all concentrated in the commune of Arica. The figures include two completed femicides, two attempted cases, and seven frustrated femicides.

Regional authorities from the Ministry of Women and SernamEG highlighted a significant gap in judicial protection, noting that while 46.9% of femicides in the country involved prior reports of violence, only 11.7% of those cases had active precautionary measures in place at the time of the attacks.
