Chilean authorities plan evictions of illegal settlements
Authorities in Chile are preparing for several eviction operations targeting illegal settlements in the San Antonio and San Felipe provinces.
In San Antonio, within the Valparaíso region, officials are planning to clear three specific areas: Cerro Centinela, the Placilla settlement, and the Cartagena train station area. The Cerro Centinela operation involves 110 hectares of state-owned land intended for a housing project, where more than 1,000 families currently reside. Regional Presidential Delegate Manuel Millones stated that the process involves administrative restitution following notification from the Ministry of Housing. In Placilla, approximately 2,500 families face a judicial eviction order with a deadline in February 2027.
In the San Felipe de Aconcagua province, an eviction of the San Felipe settlement is scheduled for October 7. Provincial Presidential Delegate Sebastián Caldera met with local mayors to discuss contingency plans, as there is concern that displaced families may establish new settlements. Authorities have identified 16 critical points that require monitoring to prevent the emergence of new precarious settlements.
