Chilean authorities urge prevention after fatal spider bites
Health concerns have risen in Chile's Coquimbo Region following the death of a 26-year-old man in La Serena and the hospitalization of a 27-year-old man in the intensive care unit of the Ovalle Provincial Hospital. The latter patient reportedly suffered severe complications, including renal damage, high fever, and liver involvement, due to bites from the Loxosceles laeta, commonly known as the recluse spider.
Experts, including Cecilia Echeverría from the Universidad del Alba, note that these spiders typically inhabit dark, dry, and undisturbed areas such as closets, warehouses, and behind furniture. Bites often occur when the arachnids feel threatened or become trapped in clothing, footwear, or bedding.
To mitigate risks, specialists recommend periodic cleaning of corners and behind furniture, avoiding the accumulation of unused objects, and wearing gloves when handling stored items. It is also advised to shake out clothing and shoes before use and to ensure beds are not placed directly against walls.
