Chilean cabinet female representation declines under Kast

The representation of women in the Chilean government has declined following the departure of three female ministers from President José Antonio Kast’s cabinet. Currently, only 8 of the 25 ministries are headed by women, representing 32% of the government.

Historical data from the National Congress Library shows varying levels of female participation in recent Chilean administrations. Michelle Bachelet’s governments saw female representation between 35% and 50%, while Sebastián Piñera’s terms ranged from 18% to 29%. Gabriel Boric’s administration began with a female-majority cabinet of 58.3% and concluded with women holding 44% of the portfolios.

While mechanisms such as quotas and parity incentives exist to encourage female participation in decision-making roles, observers note that sustainable progress requires a fundamental conviction that gender diversity is essential for a healthy democracy.
