Chilean Chamber approves interpellation of Foreign Minister Pérez Mackenna

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies has approved an interpellation of Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna, scheduled for September 28. The motion passed with 57 votes in favor, 49 against, and one abstention.

The interpellation, driven by the opposition and led by Deputy Nelson Venegas, aims to scrutinize the foreign policy direction of President José Antonio Kast’s administration. The questioning includes 13 specific topics, most notably controversies regarding the Magallanes Strait and relations with Argentina, as well as diplomatic tensions involving the United States.

Other subjects for examination include U.S. tariffs, statements made by U.S. Ambassador Brandon Judd, Chile's withdrawal of support for Michelle Bachelet’s UN candidacy, and the country's exit from the Non-Aligned Movement. The session will take place following the Foreign Minister's participation in the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
