Chilean Chamber of Deputies approves labor safety reform

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies has approved the general principle of a legislative proposal aimed at strengthening occupational safety and health. The initiative seeks to modify the Labor Code and associated laws to enhance worker protection through increased prevention measures and stricter penalties for non-compliance.

Key provisions of the bill include the ability to double fines and implement temporary closures of worksites for up to five days in cases of serious recidivism. Additionally, the proposal establishes extra compensation for workers in the event of serious or fatal accidents where employer negligence, fault, or intent is proven. The text also aims to increase the responsibility of primary companies regarding their contractors and subcontractors, while strengthening the role of unions and joint committees in risk prevention and reporting.
