Chilean Chamber of Deputies approves tourism labor statute

The Labor and Social Security Commission of the Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill to establish a special labor statute for the tourism sector. The project passed with nine votes in favor, three against, and one abstention.

The initiative aims to address the seasonal nature of tourism by introducing adaptability mechanisms for working hours. It allows for a 52-week cycle to distribute labor across high and low demand periods, such as holidays and summer or winter seasons, without increasing the legal 40-hour weekly average.

Daniel Mas, the biminister of Economy and Mining, stated that the reform seeks to reduce informality and turnover by adapting the law to current industry practices while protecting labor rights.
