Chilean cinema featured at international film festivals

Chilean cinema is gaining attention at international festivals with new works exploring social and personal histories.

Director Alba Gaviraghi has debuted her short film ‘Una fortaleza’ in the Horizontes section of the Venice Film Festival. The film is inspired by the director's personal experiences during a school occupation at the Liceo Siete de Providencia in Chile. It depicts a group of female students on strike, living within the halls and classrooms of an occupied school while facing external surveillance.

Additionally, Manuela Martelli’s second film, ‘El Deshielo’, explores themes of disappearance and social facades. Set during the era of the 1992 Universal Exposition, the narrative follows a nine-year-old girl named Inés and her friendship with Hanna, a German skiing prospect. The story touches upon a disappearance at a mountain refuge and the pressure from local figures to maintain silence to protect the reputation of the establishment.
