The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved 1.97 billion USD to support 21 projects aimed at climate mitigation and adaptation. This brings the total funding approved by the GCF this year to a record 3.2 billion USD. The decisions were made during the GCF 46th Board meeting held in Songdo, South Korea.

Key regional allocations include:

In Mexico, the GCF approved 85.3 million USD to recognize emission reductions from deforestation and forest degradation. Supported by the FAO, this six-year project will focus on forest conservation and sustainable livelihoods, benefiting approximately 33,720 people.

In Algeria, a 43 million USD grant will support the Green Dam initiative to combat desertification across six provinces. The project aims to restore over 59,000 hectares of degraded land and provide solar energy kits to rural households.

In Southern Africa, 140 million USD was allocated for green hydrogen and industrial decarbonization. Namibia will receive 56 million USD through the SDG Namibia One Fund, while South Africa will receive 84 million USD for its SA-H2 Fund.

In Colombia, a donation of approximately 146 billion COP (roughly 35 million USD) will support the “Building Water Resilience” program in Bogotá. The initiative aims to protect high-altitude ecosystems like the Chingaza and Sumapaz páramos to secure water for 10 million people.
