Codelco implements new safety measures at El Teniente division
Codelco has announced significant advancements in safety protocols at its El Teniente division following recent operational incidents. The state-owned mining company is implementing a plan to strengthen the prevention and control of deep geomechanical risks, utilizing recommendations from international expert groups and internal commissions.
Key safety measures include the expansion of a preventive seismic monitoring network using an “On-Off” model, which triggers immediate protective actions for personnel when seismic frequency exceeds established parameters. Additionally, Codelco has updated its fatality risk standards regarding rockfalls and rockbursts in underground mining. The company is also conducting biweekly field inspections in coordination with the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin).
In terms of legal cooperation, Codelco has provided over 56,000 technical records—equivalent to 1.5 terabytes of data—to the Public Ministry to assist in investigations related to recent accidents. This effort aims to support the families of deceased workers in seeking the truth. Furthermore, the company has restructured its management to elevate safety oversight to a direct dependency of the executive presidency to ensure more rigorous risk management and worker well-being.
