Chilean Congress debates ‘No + TAG’ highway toll reform

The Public Works, Transport, and Telecommunications Commission of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies has begun debating the ‘No + TAG’ bill. The legislative initiative aims to overhaul the electronic toll collection system on national highways to reduce the financial burden on households.

A primary focus of the project is the repeal of Article 114 of the Traffic Law, which regulates electronic tolling. Lawmakers are seeking to eliminate cumulative fines for non-payment or driving without a device, describing current penalties as disproportionate and unpayable for many drivers.

During the debate, Deputy Jaime Mulet characterized the move as a significant milestone for citizens, noting that negotiations regarding fee reductions with concessionaire companies are underway. Additionally, Deputy Leandro Kunstmann raised concerns regarding the technical challenges of implementing this technology in remote regions, such as the Los Ríos Region.
