Chilean Congress to resume debate on greyhound racing ban

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies is set to resume debate on August 18 regarding a legislative project to prohibit greyhound racing nationwide. The proposal seeks to amend Law No. 21.020 on the Responsible Ownership of Pets and Companion Animals.

The debate features two primary perspectives: proponents of a total ban argue that the activity leads to animal abuse, physical exhaustion, and illegal gambling, while opponents suggest the activity could continue under strict regulatory frameworks and veterinary standards.

Academic experts, including Cecilia Echeverría from the University of Alba, emphasize that animal welfare must be evaluated throughout the dog's entire life cycle, including training, competition, and retirement. Animal rights groups have also raised concerns regarding doping, confinement, and the abandonment of dogs once their competitive years end. The Chilean College of Veterinarians has expressed opposition to the races, and the discussion follows a failed attempt to pass a similar measure in August 2024.
