Chilean copper industry faces rising demand and digital challenges

Chile's copper industry faces a significant opportunity driven by the global energy transition and the expansion of artificial intelligence. The demand for copper is rising as electric vehicles require five times more of the metal than combustion engines, and data centers demand high quantities for power-intensive AI chips.

To capitalize on this, Chile is reviving the 1997 Mining Integration Treaty with Argentina, a move aimed at supporting an investment portfolio exceeding US$ 20.7 billion. A key project is the Vicuña District, valued at US$ 18 billion, which is projected to provide resources for over 70 years. However, experts note that mining success depends on parallel developments in energy security, water resilience, and port capacity to ensure efficient exports.

Beyond infrastructure, the industry faces internal challenges regarding digital maturity. A study conducted with Deloitte reveals that while technology exists, a significant gap remains in its implementation. Approximately 74% of mining companies cited resistance to change as a primary barrier, and 61% noted a disconnect between business and technology departments. Successful growth will require cultural shifts and leadership that integrates innovation with productivity and sustainability.
