Chilean education services launch strategic plan as Senate considers SLEP extension

The SLEP del Tamarugal has introduced its Local Strategic Plan (PEL) for 2026-2032, a roadmap designed to guide public education across the communes of Pozo Almonte, Camiña, Pica, Huara, and Colchane. The plan covers 45 educational institutions, including 37 schools, five high schools, and three kindergartens, impacting approximately 7,070 students.

Developed through territorial diagnosis and community participation involving students, teachers, and local authorities, the plan focuses on six strategic objectives: strengthening learning, developing pedagogical leadership, and promoting inclusive educational practices. Executive Director Andrea Osorio described the plan as a collective commitment to the province's educational development.

In a related legislative development, the Chilean Senate Education Commission has approved a bill that would extend the implementation and transfer process of Local Public Education Services (SLEP) until 2040. The proposal allows for the postponement of the remaining 12 SLEP installations and seeks to modify the requirements for municipalities to retain control of schools. While the bill aims to adjust the implementation calendar, some experts have expressed concern that the extension could delay the definitive strengthening of the public education system.
