Chilean Energy Ministry warns of vampire power consumption
The Chilean Ministry of Energy and regional authorities are warning citizens about “vampire consumption,” a phenomenon where electronic devices continue to draw electricity even when turned off or in standby mode. This silent energy drain can represent between 9% and 10% of a household's monthly electricity bill.
Experts, including Javier Piedra from the University of Concepción, note that while some devices like phone chargers have marginal impact, others such as televisions, computer monitors, sound systems, and air conditioners can contribute significantly to energy waste when left plugged in. Notably, refrigerators are excluded from this category as their power usage is considered active and essential for food preservation.
To mitigate these costs, Javier Salamanca, the Seremi of Energy, recommends adopting simple energy efficiency habits. Suggested actions include using power strips with switches, employing smart plugs to program operating schedules, and completely disconnecting devices like microwaves, computers, and gaming consoles when they are not in use.
