Chilean energy project postponed following environmental concerns

Chile's Environmental Evaluation Service (SEA) has postponed a hearing regarding the Los Cóndores-Río Diamante project, a $36 million high-voltage electrical transmission line intended to connect the energy systems of Chile and Argentina. The delay follows intense pressure from local residents and environmental groups under the ‘Salvemos Alto Maule’ campaign, as well as a public appeal from actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

The project, led by Enel Generación Chile and Enel Green Power, involves constructing 72 support towers in the Alto Maule area. Critics argue the infrastructure threatens the habitat of the Pehuenche frog (Alsodes pehuenche), a nocturnal amphibian classified as ‘critically endangered’ by the IUCN Red List. Activists claim ongoing works in the region have already contributed to increased mortality rates for the species.

The Municipality of San Clemente has expressed support for the international attention brought by DiCaprio, emphasizing the need to protect the region's fragile mountain ecosystems. Local authorities stated they do not oppose energy development in principle but demand that the project be relocated to an area that does not compromise biodiversity or the natural landscape.
