Chilean Finance Minister faces criticism over paraffin price hike

Chilean Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz is facing criticism from lawmakers following comments regarding the consumption of paraffin (kerosene) amid a price increase of $281.8 per liter. Quiroz stated that “today nobody consumes paraffin, because at these temperatures the truth is that consumption is minimal,” as a justification for the government's decision to discontinue fixed pricing for the fuel.

Lawmakers from various political factions have challenged these remarks, arguing they fail to account for the climatic realities of southern regions. Deputy Alejandra Valdebenito highlighted that in the Aysen region, paraffin remains a vital heating necessity for many families, and requested that the government freeze prices to protect household budgets. Similarly, Senator Andrea Balladares noted that families in regions like Maule continue to rely on paraffin and firewood during this season.

In response to the backlash, Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado stated that the administration is not insensitive to family difficulties, suggesting the Finance Minister was referring specifically to seasonal consumption patterns. Quiroz has since defended his statements, maintaining they are supported by Ministry of Finance measurements.
