Chilean fishing sector receives administrative and scientific support

In Chile, efforts to support the artisanal fishing sector are expanding through improved administrative services and new scientific proposals. In the Chiloé archipelago, Sernapesca has partnered with local municipalities to implement the ‘Caleta Más Cerca’ program. This initiative brings officials directly to isolated fishing coves to assist fishers with regulatory paperwork and technical queries on-site, reducing the need for travel to central offices.

Simultaneously, in the Ñuble Region, the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (INCAR²) presented opportunities for marine repopulation and restorative aquaculture during a regional meeting in Taucú. The proposal focuses on using species such as sea urchins and piure to diversify artisanal fishing activities and restore local marine ecosystems. These initiatives aim to promote sustainable marine development and strengthen the economic resilience of coastal communities.
