Chilean Foreign Minister addresses potential parliamentary interpellation

Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna has addressed the possibility of a parliamentary interpellation following calls from the opposition to question his management. The opposition seeks to hold the minister accountable regarding matters of national sovereignty and tariff negotiations with the United States.

Pérez Mackenna stated that he is not concerned by the potential move, noting that the Parliament has the legal right to summon ministers and that he has appeared before Congress 11 times during his five months in office. He defended his recent performance, describing the government's foreign policy achievements as notable.

Deputy Jaime Mulet supported the use of an interpellation over a constitutional accusation, arguing that it is a legitimate oversight tool that “orders” rather than “disorders” the political process. Mulet emphasized that while the process helps democracy and oversight, national security matters would be handled according to legal protocols regarding public debate.
