Chilean officials respond to Milei and U.S. Ambassador remarks
Diplomatic tensions have risen in Chile following controversial remarks made by Argentine President Javier Milei and U.S. Ambassador Brandon Judd during the Foro Madrid in Santiago.
Ambassador Judd suggested that Chile is currently implementing the 'Donroe Doctrine'—a strategic framework combining elements of the Monroe Doctrine with the Trump administration's foreign policy—noting that the current administration of José Antonio Kast makes such implementation 'very easy.' Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna has since distanced the government from these claims, stating that Chile has made no formal declaration to accept such a doctrine.
Simultaneously, President Milei faced intense criticism from Chilean officials and political groups after he characterized the period following the overthrow of Salvador Allende as a time of stability and growth. Maya Fernández, the granddaughter of Allende and former Defense Minister, condemned the remarks as a glorification of the 1973 coup d'état. The Grupo de Puebla also issued a rebuke, emphasizing that the military dictatorship destroyed democracy.
In a separate diplomatic development, Chilean Deputy Alejandro Riquelme Ducci praised a joint declaration between Presidents Kast and Milei, which he described as historic for explicitly recognizing Chilean sovereignty over the Strait of Magellan.
