Chilean fruit industry shifts toward quality and regional expansion

The Chilean fruit industry is undergoing significant structural shifts, according to recent industry analyses. In the apple sector, Copefrut commercial manager Andrés Nawrath noted that the challenge has moved from increasing volume to improving product categorization. He highlighted that Chile's primary advantage is its counter-seasonal production, though the country has lost market share in the Southern Hemisphere to South Africa over the last decade.

Simultaneously, the La Araucanía region is seeing a major expansion in fruit cultivation, driven in part by climate change. Antonio Walker, president of the National Agriculture Society (SNA), reported that fruit tree acreage in the region grew by over 150% between 2012 and 2025, reaching approximately 17,300 hectares. This growth is led by crops such as cherries, blueberries, and hazelnuts, with China remaining a primary destination for regional cherry exports.
