Chile announces military modernization and new Magallanes bases

Chile has announced an extensive military modernization plan aimed at strengthening its presence in the Magallanes Region and enhancing its strategic projection toward Antarctica. The program, which extends to 2043, includes the construction of new military bases in the southern extreme to increase territorial control and surveillance of airspace and maritime zones between the Ice Fields and the South Pole.

Key equipment upgrades include replacing the aging F-5 fighter jets with fourth or fifth-generation aircraft, renewing the Bell UH-1H helicopter fleet, and upgrading C-130 Hercules transport capabilities. The plan also involves modernizing Leopard 1 tanks and incorporating new technologies such as unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and advanced communication tools. Defense Minister Fernando Barros confirmed that the defense sector will be exempt from a planned 3% budget reduction, with investment expected to nearly double in the coming year.

Simultaneously, a political controversy has emerged regarding Chile's participation in the Shield of the Americas. Former presidents Michelle Bachelet and Gabriel Boric have called for a reconsideration of the membership, expressing concerns that the initiative could compromise Chile's foreign policy autonomy and sovereignty. The current administration and ruling political parties have rejected these claims, asserting that international cooperation against organized crime does not necessitate a loss of national sovereignty.
