Chilean government faces criticism over Junaeb TIC scholarship funding cuts

Criticism has mounted against the decision to withhold funding for the Junaeb TIC scholarships in the 2027 budget proposal. These scholarships, which include programs such as ‘Yo elijo mi PC’, provide computers and connectivity to vulnerable students to help bridge the digital divide.

Evelyn Matthei, a former presidential candidate, criticized the government of José Antonio Kast, stating that leaving thousands of children without computers is an incomprehensible decision that penalizes vulnerable families. Matthei noted that during her campaign, she warned that significant fiscal reductions could lead to cuts in social spending.

Advocates argue that removing these resources will increase inequality, as many students currently rely on shared devices or mobile phones for schoolwork. There are calls for members of the National Congress to take a stance on whether to restore these funds in the upcoming budget cycle.
