Chilean government fast-tracks political system reform

The Chilean government has decided to reactivate a political system reform project that had been stalled in Congress since the beginning of the year. José García, Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, announced that the Executive will grant the proposal ‘suma urgencia’ (extreme urgency) to ensure it can complete its final legislative stages and become law during September.

The initiative follows an agreement reached in a joint commission of deputies and senators, which resolved the differences that had previously blocked the project. The reform aims to strengthen democracy by introducing changes to the political system, including stricter requirements for the formation of political parties and modifications to their financing. Additionally, the proposal seeks to establish higher requirements for independent candidates and provide legal recognition for parliamentary committees.
