Chilean government proposes regional holiday for Magallanes
The Chilean government has announced plans to introduce a bill to establish September 21 as a permanent regional holiday in Magallanes. Vice President Claudio Alvarado confirmed the initiative during commemorations of the 183rd anniversary of the takeover of the Strait of Magellan.
The proposed holiday honors the 1843 arrival of the Goleta Ancud, a historical milestone that secured Chilean sovereignty over the southern territory. Alvarado noted that he discussed the proposal with President José Antonio Kast prior to the announcement. The move responds to long-standing requests from local authorities and community members in the region.
