Chilean government reaches toll reduction agreement with Autopista Central

The Chilean government has reached an agreement with Autopista Central to reduce toll rates, including a 10% reduction in base fares and a 25% reduction during peak hours. In exchange, the highway concession will be extended by 20 months.

This measure has sparked debate regarding its social utility and long-term impact. While intended to alleviate financial pressure on families, critics question the criteria used for the reduction and warn it could set a precedent for politically motivated adjustments rather than sustainable public policy.

Discussions also highlight the need for better governance of Santiago’s highway network. Experts suggest that, similar to the Red Movilidad bus system, the metropolitan highway network requires a more integrated management approach to improve user experience, coordinate payment systems, and address issues like fare evasion. Currently, highways remain among the lowest-rated services by citizens compared to other transport sectors.
