Chilean health authorities report rise in respiratory viruses

Health authorities in Chile are reporting a significant rise in respiratory viruses, including influenza, rhinovirus, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). In the Coquimbo region, epidemiological analysis reveals that nearly 70% of individuals who died from influenza were not vaccinated. Karen Irribarra Vergara, the regional health authority, noted that while over 108,000 seniors have been vaccinated, the current coverage of 57% remains well below the 85% protection goal.

Simultaneously, the Puerto Aysén Hospital has reported a sharp increase in respiratory consultations, with emergency visits rising from 88 to 201 in just two weeks. In the Aysén region, Influenza B has been the most detected agent, accounting for approximately 41.7% of identified cases. Medical staff are urging the public to use masks, practice hand washing, and seek vaccination to mitigate the impact of the increased viral circulation.
