Chilean industrial and community groups demand electricity tariff reforms
Various sectors in Chile are calling for significant changes to the electricity tariff system ahead of projected increases in 2027.
In the Chiloé province, neighborhood associations from Ancud, Castro, Dalcahue, Chonchi, and Quellón have expressed strong opposition to rising energy costs. Local leaders are demanding tariff reductions and expanded subsidies, particularly for low-income families. They have called on members of District 26 parliament to take active legislative action to defend the region against perceived inequalities in how central government relief measures are applied.
Simultaneously, an alliance of five industrial guilds—including ASIQUIM, ACENOR, ASIMET, Chilealimentos, and Pescadores Industriales del Biobío—is developing a joint proposal to revise how electricity is charged during peak hours. The groups argue that the current mechanism, which applies surcharges between 18:00 and 22:00 from April to September, increases operational costs and forces companies to alter production schedules or rely on fossil fuel generators to avoid high bills.
