Chilean lawmakers urge recall of French Ambassador
Members of the UDI party in Chile, including President Guillermo Ramírez and Deputy Cristóbal Martínez, have requested that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recall the French Ambassador, Cyrille Rogeau, for consultations.
The request follows an event in France where Héctor Llaitul, a spokesperson for the Coordinadora Arauco-Malleco (CAM), received a medal from the French National Assembly. Llaitul is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for crimes including violations of the State Security Law.
Parliamentarians expressed strong condemnation of the recognition, arguing that the gesture presents a convicted individual as a victim of political persecution rather than a member of a terrorist organization. They urged the Chilean government to formally express its displeasure to the French government regarding the distinction.
