Chilean marraqueta ranked among the world's best breads
Two traditional Chilean breads, marraqueta and pan de huevo, have been recognized by the culinary platform TasteAtlas as being among the 15 best breads in the world.
The marraqueta, also known as pan batido or pan francés, secured second place with a score of 4.3, sharing the position with Ukraine’s pampushka. The top spot was awarded to Colombia’s pan de bono, which earned 4.5 points. TasteAtlas highlighted the marraqueta’s characteristic four-section shape, crunchy crust, and light crumb, noting its versatility in Chilean breakfasts and sandwiches.
Pan de huevo also featured in the top 15 with a score of 3.7. Nutritionist and academic Daniela González from the University of Santiago de Chile noted that the marraqueta’s popularity stems from its role in Chilean food identity, its texture, and its accessibility, rather than just its nutritional profile.
