Chilean military evaluates German defense technology upgrades

Chilean military branches are evaluating advanced defense technologies from German manufacturers. The Chilean Army has been presented with modernization options from Rheinmetall for its Oerlikon KBA 25x137 mm cannons used on AIFV and Mowag Piraña 6x6 vehicles. These upgrades include digital fire control, thermal cameras, and new ammunition types designed to counter drones.

Simultaneously, the Chilean Air Force (FACh) has received presentations regarding the CA-1 Europa, an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) developed by the German company Helsing. The CA-1 Europa is a modular platform weighing between three and five tons that utilizes the Centaur artificial intelligence system for autonomous operation and situational awareness.

The UCAV project includes several variants: the CA-1KA attack version, which is expected to fly in 2027 and enter service in 2029, and the CA-1EA electronic warfare version, planned for 2031. The system is designed to operate individually, in swarms, or alongside manned aircraft.
