Chilean mining faces talent gap as 37,000 new workers are needed by 2034
Chile's mining industry faces a significant human capital challenge, characterized by a gap between student interest and industry knowledge. A study by CESCO, based on a CADEM survey of 700 university students, found that while 56.3% of students are willing to work in mining, only 14.4% claim to have substantial knowledge of the sector.
Students largely associate mining with economic opportunity (68.9%) and job stability (55.45%). However, the lack of familiarity with professional profiles and diverse roles remains a barrier to talent attraction. This comes at a critical time as the industry prepares for energy transitions and technological shifts.
To address labor needs, the sector is projected to require approximately 37,000 new workers by 2034, according to the Alianza CCM-Eleva Workforce Study. In response, the matchminero.cl platform has launched, utilizing artificial intelligence to match technicians, professionals, and students with vacancies in mining companies and their suppliers.
