Chilean mining sector faces safety crisis amid rising fatalities
The Chilean mining sector is facing a critical safety crisis following seven worker fatalities in less than a month, bringing the total to thirteen deaths so far this year. This surge in accidents has highlighted significant gaps in national safety oversight and policy implementation.
Despite the approval of the National Policy for Safety and Health in Mining by the Interministerial Committee on Safety and Health at Work in July 2025, the policy has yet to take effect due to a pending ruling from the Comptroller General. This delay prevents the country from fully complying with ILO Convention 176, which Chile ratified in June 2024.
Concerns regarding oversight are mounting, as Sernageomin reported having only nine inspectors for approximately 1,700 facilities in Antofagasta. Furthermore, proposed budget cuts for the Dirección del Trabajo and the Superintendencia de Seguridad Social for 2027 may further limit the state's capacity to enforce safety standards and conduct inspections.
