Chilean municipalities debate property tax compensation

Catalina San Martín, the Mayor of Las Condes, has become a central figure in the discussion as her municipality is projected to receive approximately $13 billion CLP in compensation due to high lost revenue from exemptions. San Martín defended the process, noting that Las Condes contributes $350 billion CLP to the Municipal Common Fund and arguing that the compensation ensures no municipality suffers a loss. She also criticized the selective focus on Las Condes by political opponents.

Orlando Vargas Pizarro, the Mayor of Arica, has raised concerns regarding the centralization of this debate. He argues that the national discourse is disproportionately dominated by mayors from Santiago, potentially overlooking the specific needs and realities of regional municipalities. He has called for greater decentralization in public policy discussions to ensure regional authorities have an equal voice.
