Chilean municipalities launch empanada culinary contests

Municipalities in Chile are launching culinary competitions to celebrate local gastronomy and traditional flavors ahead of the Fiestas Patrias celebrations.

In Calama, the municipality has opened registrations for the ‘Best Empanada of the City of Calama 2026’ contest. The competition features two categories: Entrepreneurs and Citizens. Participants must prepare traditional oven-baked empanadas made with beef, onion, egg, and olives. The event is scheduled for September 3 at the Manuel Rodríguez Park Explanada.

In Valparaíso, the local government is inviting formalized gastronomic establishments to compete for the title of ‘Best Empanada of Valparaíso 2026’. This contest includes three categories: Traditional Beef, Seafood, and Vegetarian. A specialized jury will evaluate establishments based on ingredient quality, dough, baking, flavor, and presentation. Selected participants will be featured in the ‘Valparaíso Empanada Route 2026’ and the Empanada Festival on September 4.
