Chilean mussels recalled in Croatia over radiation concerns
The Croatian State Inspectorate has issued a recall for specific batches of whole, cooked, and frozen Chilean mussels sold by Metro Cash & Carry in Zagreb. The recall affects 1 kg packages from LOT CO1269-338, with EAN numbers 7804677410079 and 8718969326797, frozen on June 8, 2026, and best before June 8, 2028.
The recall is due to suspected exposure to ionizing radiation used for sterilization. While ionizing radiation is used in the food industry to destroy microorganisms like Salmonella and E. coli, EU regulations mandate that such treatment must only occur in facilities authorized by EU member states. The product is deemed non-compliant with Regulation (EC) No 178/2002.
Authorities clarify that while ionizing radiation itself does not make food radioactive, the products are being withdrawn to ensure compliance with safety standards. Consumers are advised not to consume the mussels and to return them to Metro Cash & Carry centers for a full refund.
