Chilean Navy dismisses personnel accused of group rape in Rapa Nui
The Chilean Navy has dismissed naval personnel accused of a group rape involving a young woman in Rapa Nui. The institution stated that the continued presence of the accused was “perjudicial para el servicio” (detrimental to the service), exercising its authority under the Armed Forces Personnel Statute.
The incident reportedly occurred during an unauthorized party at a naval facility on the early morning of October 3. According to the victim's father, at least four Marine Corps personnel were involved in the sexual assault. The Navy has also ordered an administrative summary investigation to determine internal regulatory infractions.
To date, the Prosecutor's Office has formalized two officials, who are currently in preventive detention. They will be transferred to a naval facility in Talcahuano to serve their precautionary measures. The ongoing investigation has an 80-day period to clarify the full extent of the events and the participation of others.
