Chilean Navy joins Pacific Dragon 2026 maritime exercise

The Chilean Navy's frigate ‘Almirante Cochrane’ is participating in the Pacific Dragon 2026 exercise in United States waters. As the only Latin American navy involved in the drill, the vessel is training alongside six other nations to enhance Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) capabilities.

The exercise focuses on developing a common aerial picture through real-time data sharing and testing responses to various threats, ranging from combat aircraft to ballistic missiles. Captain Federico Cavada, commander of the unit, noted that the participation serves as both a learning opportunity and a recognition of the institution's professionalism.

Originally a trilateral initiative between the United States, Japan, and South Korea, Pacific Dragon has expanded to include participants such as Australia, Italy, and Spain. Following this deployment, the frigate is scheduled to navigate toward Rapa Nui to conduct oceanic fishery inspection operations.
